24-hour nurse advice line for UCSC students:  831-459-2591

Urgent Care

The health center website at https://healthcenter.ucsc.edu/index.html is the up-to-date repository for information about on-campus health services and health insurance. Here we just state a few basic things to know. To quote the current insurance information page (which will presumably be a broken link a year from now),

The University of California Regents mandate that all students be covered by a health insurance plan. All full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students are automatically enrolled in and charged for the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless they choose to submit an online insurance waiver confirming they have acceptable health insurance coverage.

What is UC SHIP?

UC SHIP is an affordable health insurance plan tailored to the health care needs of UCSC students. The medical plan features year-round, worldwide coverage using the Anthem Blue Cross network, and includes prepaid access to care at the UCSC Student Health Center for illness or injury. This means students can receive convenient, high-quality on-campus care when they are sick or injured without having to be concerned about cost or availability of the care they need. Preventive health care visits are covered at the Student Health Center at 100%. As part of UC SHIP, students have access to a comprehensive prescription drug formulary administered by Catamaran. The UC SHIP Plan provides optimal coverage for services on campus and in the Santa Cruz community, and peace of mind for both parents and students. A referral is REQUIRED for ALL off-campus care, with the exception of urgent or emergency care. The dental plan is provided by Delta Dental PPO; the vision plan is provided by Anthem Blue Cross. See plan brochures on the left navigation bar of this webpage for detailed benefits. To directly access the UC SHIP website please see http://ucop.edu/ucship.

One reason you might waive UC SHIP for your first year or few years is if you are under 26 (per federal laws) and have a parent whose job benefits entitle you to a health plan that you judge will cover you better than UC SHIP would.

As far as I know, my UC SHIP fees are paid by a combination of my fellowship and my advisor's grant money. Who pays UC SHIP for an incoming first-year?
